Why Curt Schilling Absolutely Belongs In The Hall Of Fame!

25 Mar

Curt SchillingYou’re hearing a lot of chatter about whether or not Curt Schilling belongs in MLB’s Hall of Fame.  On the pro side you have his post season brilliance which is quite literally second to none.  On the con side there’s the relatively small total of regular season wins (216).

But, here’s the reason that Schilling absolutely belongs in the Hall.  You simply can’t write the history of baseball without him.  And I don’t mean that in a Don Larsen kind of way.  No disrespect to Mr. Larsen, but outside of the relative fluke of throwing a no hitter during a world series game what else that he accomplished in his baseball career would demand his entry into a serious history of baseball?  Nothing.  Nada and zilch.

In Curt Schilling’s case, his achievements demand that they be recounted in any history of baseball worth the paper or computer screen it’s read on.  Curt Schilling didn’t just have one lucky shining moment.  He came through in the clutch more often than any pitcher before him ever has.  When the moment was most important, Schilling took the ball without hesitation and delivered.  And he did it over and over again, to the tune of three World Series Titles.

When it come right down to it, the voters need to admit that there are certain players in the game who are just special.  There achievements merit us looking past regular season stats.  There’s no doubt that regular season stats could be used to make the argument that Schilling wasn’t clearly superior to David Cone or David Wells.

Fine.  I buy into both arguments.

The question is who would you rather have on the mound with everything on the line?  The answer is Curt Schilling.

And that’s because he was special.  We were privileged to watch a Hall of Famer pitch during our lifetime.
