Fun Fact About Texas & Teen Pregnancy!

Always good to find out you’re right about something no matter what it is.

Here’s a fun fact I heard today.

Texas is tops in the nation in abstinence programs.  They’ve got more of them than anyone.  In a twist, it also turns out they’re fifth in teen pregnancies, which I’m guess is what teaching abstinence is supposed to prevent.

Yes!

I’ve always said to anyone who’s asked, and for the record most haven’t, that I think keeping sex ed to just teaching abstinence is an incredibly foolish thing.  It took a great state like Texas to prove me right.

Thanks, Texas!

Now maybe start giving your kids some actual useful information along with the good advice to wait until they’re really ready.

PS – heard this fun fact as a tease for tomorrow’s show on the Fair Game radio show.

Here’s their link:

  • Unfortunately, Texas, like many other states has accepted money to only teach abstinence in schools. I researched just a little bit right after the news came out about Florida and students thinking they could prevent pregnancy by drinking mountain dew. You ought to google and research it a little–You are completely right–the states where abstinence is taught are most likely to have higher pregnancy rates. Apparently many states are finally starting to refuse that extra money so that they can teach other things (like sex-ed). Texas is just slow in coming around.
