Laying in his jail cell bunk tonight, I have to wonder what Michael Vick is thinking about today’s NFL Draft. In just one year he’s gone from being on stage at last year’s NFL Draft helping honor the VT murder victims to a penitentiary where’s he’s paying the price for his canine victims. Vick’s gone from the face of an NFL franchise to watching along with the rest of us (assuming he got TV privileges) as Matt Ryan was drafted to take his place.
Despite it all, Vick is not a completely stupid guy. He knows football after all. I think he must know that the Falcons did what they had to with their first round pick. Atlanta’s pick is all about restoring hope. Vick’s stumble led the franchise into free fall. Bobby Petrino proved to not be up to the challenge of righting the ship and didn’t even bother to finish out the season before jumping overboard. Plain and simple, the Falcons are a mess.
Matt Ryan is the hope for the future. Will he merit being the third player chosen in this draft? Could the Falcons have netted a quarterback later on? Those were never considerations for Falcons. Michael Vick, as he shuts his eyes tonight, knows he gave them no other choice. Matt Ryan had to be Atlanta’s pick.
Good night, Michael Vick…
